Triumph 1050 cant get 6th

So in the spirit of Diagnosis what occured ?
Other gears all good ?
Gear shift lever not gone limp ?
Doesn't engage or does and pops out under load ?
Any noises when 6th engaged ?
Just occured out of the blue or proceeded an event ?
Any particular reason the Crank cover came off ?

Looks like a Speed Triple.

Don't know about older models but my 2009 Sprint has 6

Doesn't engage or does and pops out under load ? you can get 6th if the cycle straight through the box, dwell in any gear or 5th it wont go in, feels as if its not there. Neutral is very difficult to get.
Any noises when 6th engaged ? No
Just occured out of the blue or proceeded an event ? See below
Any particular reason the Crank cover came off ? Has to come off to expose bolts holding c/cover on. 3 gaskets

I’ve always used Putoline oil, carried out a major service 1k back. Changed oil to Motul. Within 500mile I it was very hard down the box, neutral none existent. Changed to Shell, a lot better but still cant get 6th (as above) and neutral is difficult. Oil is black, clutch plates are picking up, no wear to friction plates.

Thankfully you can take the selector and dogs out from the oil pan.

Not at the moment. I spoke to the local Dealer yesterday and they use nothing but Motul.
I didnt like it though

Took the selector shaft assembly out today. The pedal end has a noticeable step, and the selector mechanism pawls are also showing signs of wear and damage.







The pins look good on the cam plate, a few burrs on the cam were stoned off.




Looks like I need to take the drum out.

Thankfully I can get it out without taking the motor out. Just the oil pan off

That’s alright but how do you work under the bike?

Lay it down?
Stand it up? I tried this afternoon, lets just say I’ll not be trying it again

I tried lifting from the wheel, it was top heavy. Just tried around the bar clamps, I can get it high enough but it scares the hell out of me. So I’m going to lay it down, on the nearside

have you had a look on the Triumph forums, clutch set-up and drag seems to be popular problem if you don't find anything wrong with the drum.
Could you get all the gears without the engine running, pulling the plugs out and turning over, rotating the rear wheel /selecting by hand?

Are you hoping to find a bit missing from the Selector Drum ? as that would probably be the culprit.

I’m not sure whats going on. I reckon its been opened open before as the bolts weren’t an even tension. Might give the original dealer a call tomorrow and see if they can shed any light on it. Currently waiting on a mate coming round so I can watch the drum while he cycles the gears.

What I have done in the past is put a few used car tyres down and lie the bike on them.

Engine crane comes to mind Dave and some straps

That's the handy thing about a jabbewooky old bike, you can just give it a rest on the floor to access the underside, without worrying too much.

Thanks for the offer Russ. I’ve tried picking it up from the front end. Aka wheelie. But it gives me the willies been under it. So I’m going to lay it down......

Thats after emergency repair work to the wood stove
