Can one of those who believe that publication of this story impairs national security give a rational explanation for that argument? I really don't see it. The fact that the news emerged so very quickly implies that the Navy is not good at keeping secrets. That being so, and as suggested in an earlier post, there was probably a Russian fishing vessel taking pictures.
At a time when both of the newish aircraft carriers are off-line, I'm reminded that there used to be a radio comedy show called "The Navy Lark" and wonder if they should bring that back?

Didn’t have much to do with the weapons side of things but I’d venture a guess that it’s likely a trident they’ve had at the back of a cupboard for some time and it had gone past it’s sell by date. Won’t be armed in any way shape or form and makes no difference whether it hits the target or the sea bed- it was a firing drill.
Incidentally, somewhere there’s a picture of our old boy loading a dummy trident into one of the V boats with the crane when it was in dock in barrow before she went out on trials.

When I was at uni studying computer science, we had this elderly chap lecturing programming. When he spotted something wrong in your code it often triggered memories of his time in the defence industry. The story would start with which weapon system he encountered a similar error in, and always ended up with the missile/torpedo/mine exploding prematurely, heading off at a tangent or returning to the launch vehicle unintentionally
