Fenland clay, allegedly, but it might be that the ground has been made up with rubble or whatever.What kind of ground? We auger into clay quite regularly with a diamond drilling rig fitted with mining barrel and auger bits but 20 feet at 6" is going to be a few quid.

It's possibly worth getting a ground radar survey before you do any ramming of pipes, there's all sorts buried around the place.
