The problem with tree roots is that they have all sorts of nooks and crannies that soil gets pushed up into. It's these little pockets full of soil that do the damage. It's the silica in soil that's the chain killer.Dig a foot around the stump then a chainsaw will do it no problem, Id say I'd have it out in half hour. If your careful it wont blunt the chain.
Recip saw would do it but take ages.
