Dig a foot around the stump then a chainsaw will do it no problem, Id say I'd have it out in half hour. If your careful it wont blunt the chain.
Recip saw would do it but take ages.

The problem with tree roots is that they have all sorts of nooks and crannies that soil gets pushed up into. It's these little pockets full of soil that do the damage. It's the silica in soil that's the chain killer.

Looks similar to the little chainsaw blades for grinders that were banned recently- just not so many teeth but bigger!!!

Have actually used one @8ob ? Is it really scary or am I just being overly cautious.

I have one for a 12” petrol disc saw, you do need to hang on. That said it’s the ideal thing for the job, really useful when you come across big roots in excavations or fencing. Had this one many years, if it dulls off turn it around, it’s self sharpening.

if using a chainsaw dig round it and hose the soil off and it wont blunt the chain so much .one chain should do it so cost about 20 quid for a new one

Last one I tried with a chainsaw had a stone in the middle of it that the tree grew around! Made a mess of the chain, had to grind the teeth back quite a bit to get a good edge again!

Stump grinder teeth last year's with regular sharpening.

I do at time miss the Vermeer hydraulic driven grinder.

The point I tried to makecearlier is tgat you don't know where the wood is. Think of a tree stump as a molar with a lot more roots.

Its not difficult, you dig a bit, cut the roots you can see. Generally they will spread outwards from the stump. The deep roots are not too important unless your going for complete removal for replanting, which is not what the OP is after..

I’ve removed a few tree stumps at home and used a reciprocating saw, chain saw and a sharpened digging bar.

It’s not always easy to see where the roots grow from on the underside of the stump. I used a bottle Jack to apply stress to see where the remaining roots are that stop the stump from being removed.

The digging bar is really handy for both chopping roots and digging around roots.

My stumps were mostly in clay & sandstone and it only takes a second to blunt the chainsaw chain from contact with the clay.
It’s not a massive problem as I have a few chains and just sharpen them to make sure I always have at least one ready for duty.

It is a good feeling though when you get those stumps out.

I recently dug out a large stump by hand in a rear garden for some one. The access was very bad & no chance of getting any machines near it, once removed I rolled it to a fence with a couple farm jacks & we had it lifted over the fence with a crane . Don’t underestimate how difficult a large stump is to dig by hand and watch for any services hidden in the roots.

Not for the faint hearted, it looks like it could do some serious damage if you don't have a good strong grip.

Reminds me of the 10" carbide saw blade a Filipino deck hand fitted to a 9" angry grinder, for stripping paint and rust off the deck...... no guard either.....
