That look like a static phase converter so you won't get 3 phase without a motor attached.

Shouldn’t the static phase converter alone run fairly low power 3 phase motors? I cannot seem to get this to start a smallish 2kW planer thicknesser or a smaller 1.75kW section roller! A bit stumped as turning the knob on front doesn’t seem to affect anything…

Once the motor is attached you adjust the central knob to adjust the manufactured phase voltage. One mine it starts at one position but once running is far smoother on a different setting.

Do I add a motor in parallel to the machine I want to power? I assume this helps provide the third phase then? Would it be as simple as this, and will the box start this motor?

The knob on the front seems to have no effect on the phase converters ability to start anything or change anything. When I plug it into my planer thicknesser I’ve found that spinning the planer with a drill and then hitting the on button once it’s up to speed works to get it going.

You need to make sure that any control power wiring on the machine that you're powering, is connected to the two legs that have 415V, otherwise the control circuit won't get any power to actually activate the machine.

Good point I had to swap phases on my late for this reason.
