Transporting a pillar drill?

Just a quick bit of advice chaps!

Going to collect the Fobco bench pillar drill I bought the other day - and was going to put it in the back of the Golf.

Now pretty sure its going to fit size wise, and pretty sure the car can take it weight wise (as its probably only the same weight as another person in the car).

I just wondered whether its a problem lying these things on their side etc or do they need to remain vertical? Do they have anything like a oil supply etc for the bearings?

Apologies if this sounds dumb - The only stupid question is one that isnt asked and all that! Just dont want to drive 3 hours there only to find out I cant get it in the car due to a silly oversight.

Pretty sure the spindle bearings are grease lubricated, either sealed for life or via grease nipples. The speed is varied by belt and pulleys so there is no gearbox, so no oil.

An old sheet to protect the car and something to wedge it with, amazing how things can roll on a corner, even items you would think impossible to do so.

and have a mate ready to give you a lift out have had to phone around a couple of times when i have under estimated the difficulty of getting it out

When I picked up my meddings drill the support post that I thought was hollow was in fact a solid piece, boy was it heavy but I just about managed to hoof it up onto my shoulder without breaking anything - on me, not the drill. the guy I got it off had a bad back so couldnt help...

take a mate with you, when i picked up my mill (only about the size of a pillar drill but with a bed) took it into to pieces and still struggled to get it in the car! (vento) but weight wise you will be fine as long as the car is not lowered (mine was a bit close to the arches!)
