Transmitting Wifi through powerline extender to shed

I am trying to broadcast Wifi around a yard and into sheds with metal doors.

Thus Saturday I setup an Access Point (a Ubiquiti M5 set in access point mode) however as soon as I close the metal door on the shed, signal just disappears. Could pick up signal 30m away when out in the open.

Anyone any experience with transmitting ethernet through powerline extenders, I see mixed reviews.

Electricity Network as follows - Single Phase, all supplied from one meter

Route Internet would have to travel if I was to use a Powerline Extender

Internet Supply to Junction Box 1 containing fuses trip switches etc 30m
Underground Cable from Junction Box 1 to Junction Box 2 40m
Junction Box 2 to Point 2 where I want internet 5m

I use them with a decent level of success, I find having fast internet helps as they are not great with speed

Some will claim they cause RF interference, but as a licensed amateur I have never seen this

I use them but only to link locations with circuits on the same consumer unit. I have tried cu1 20m swa to cu2 and it's patchy at best. Others may fare better than me.
I'm sorry, I don't have a solution for you, I got around it by strategically placed mesh WiFi APs that suits my layout.
Ethernet cable or point to point link? there's another thread running that's discussing this very point

I’ve used them and they’ve worked ok. Tp link were the ones, i had it going down to a summerhouse prob about 20m from the house?

Powerline Ethernet is the work of the devil. Previous place was full of early adopters of the technology. It pretty much ruined short wave listening. A few watts of RF soon causes the links to drop.

To make an efficient wideband transmitter with lots of harmonics all the way into UHF, you feed a juicy, complex square wave signal into an open and unterminated aerial system. What does that remind you of?

I have tp link to the garage.

Works fine, but...

I also have a link in the house. If the garage unit is turned on, it reduces the speed of the rest of the system.

It all still works, but you wouldn't want to transfer large files with the garage on.


My garage is, maybe, 25m from the house? Maybe 20m. Somthing like that. Not conjoined, but not miles either.

Used to use them at the old house, worked perfect there, house was small with modern wiring.

new house is bigger, old wiring, tried them but they were useless.

guessing you have a separate fuse the garage? if you could have a socket on that same fuse, inside the house then the same again on the other side they should work well

at our place, the power line thing is on one ring in the house, which is on the house consumer unit

on that consumer unit, theres a, umm, somthing (i dont know about house electrics) - a switch, that controls the armoured cable out to the garage

theres another consumer unit in another building on the way to the garage, but i think the armoured just links / joins though this

then the power line thing off a spur on that


but, as i say, turning that on reduces the speed of the tplink to tplink in the house. it all still works, but the speed drops down a whole load

theres a little app which shows you the speeds BUT because i dont actually have a computer connected to any tplink unit, i cant use it any more. the tplink in the house is ONLY to connect two mesh points together.

it is in use all the time, and is reliable enough.

the garage one is reliable also, but i tend to keep it turned off, so as it does not pull down the speed of the mesh link, which so much other stuff relies on.

Going through my network, I have largely ditched them.

I ran a cable to the office to remove one, then when the office went I ran that cable to my sons room to get rid of another.

Currently have 2, one connected to a Pi in the loft that feeds 360 Radar and one that connects to a wireless repeater in a far corner of the house

Once Starlink is installed next week I will probably remove the repeater and just keep the loft one

I used to use them with variable success. The interference from our oil cooker running would affect the signal. Tried to use them out to the workshop but didn't work very well.

I have everything running now on an Eero mesh wifi and I get good signal everywhere, even through the steel door and thick walls of my workshop.

I've used TP link units at a customer's place several years ago with reasonable success. Rural smallholding on single phase and several submains. It got connection from the main house to residential caravan, art studio etc. About 20m radius from origin.

I used one at work for 10 years and never had one problem. (Other than it lost the pairing a couple of times).
Was around 40m from hub to my pc.
