Transmission jack recommendations

Looking for a cheap and cheerful one that isn’t total crap. It won’t be used much. Biggest job might be carrying a Defender gearbox out (but hopefully not).

Preferably available on Amazon as shipping can be a killer otherwise. Reviews on there range from 5* to 1* so aren’t very helpful overall.

they dont do defender gearboxes well ,,, ideally you want the next one up ,,,, ive done dozens of them and I wouldnt be using one of those at all
even with the next one up you will need to make a cradle ..... some one will tell you they do them with a trolley jack and a brush shaft , yep its possible , but I wouldnt be doing it , especially with the newer ones.
we had three or four of those in your picture and they have a use , but not defender gearboxes.

Cheers. I did the Td5 clutch a couple of years ago, engine hoist around the bellhousing and muggins-‘ere on my back, ‘bench pressing’ the back end to get the gbox in and out. Not much fun.

There’s some clutch judder and a little oil at the wading plug hole. I did the crank rear seal (came with the LOF kit) but not the gearbox one.

never worry about it until you have to ,,,, Ive seen some of them dripping and still driving ok ,,, some dont , some do ,,, but that way is doable through the door and trolley jack , but that skinny trans lift just wont do the job . I have taken freelander boxes and evoques [ same thing ish] out with one of those but even then its with a special basket designed and made for the job , those eight speed autos are heavy enough to be right on the edge of what I think is wise .

Max height is only 1740mm, though - more like 1980 on the slimmer types.

id be interested in how thick that top ram is ,,, you can end up with a fair bit of force on the jack ,,, its suspiciously cheap .

Sounds like a bench/table would be less sketchy

The nicest one i have ever used was made from and old RAF missile loader,
some look like an oversized trolley jack.
You could pick them up from witham specialist vehicles, but Ramco seem to do a lot of the disposal stuff now.

really cant see how that would work , they can take a fair bit of wrestling about , and some funny angle changes as you roll them in

Tom has a lot more experience than me but I've used the type in the first post (think mine is Sealey branded), under my 4 post ramp to do defender and disco gearboxes. I do have a better top than that cradle (like the top of the black one Tom linked to)

The disco I did by myself over a couple of nights in one January.

One with an adjustable flat top is far better than one with a fixed cradle.

Only thing a fixed cradle is good for, is somewhere to lift the gearbox to/from at roughly the right height.

The flat top I have is pretty good. You can adjust the angles on it to match the inevitable angle the block tips to when you pull the box - this is really helpful on refitting.

I made a plate that bolts onto the flat plate on the top , and bolts onto the cover on the drop gear at the trans box and goes forwards onto the bell house case , and catches it like a v block would ,,, then we use the tilt on the top plate on the trans jack to change the angle as the box goes in , and a 3 ft length of pipe over the gear lever guides it up through the hole and stops it snagging
