A kid behind a stores counter called me “mate”, I replied I am not your mate, never have been and never will. To you I am Mr……… unless I tell you otherwise.I know quite a few people called Mate. A very common name
I used to do work for a printing company up that way and all the engineering guys used to call me that - I thought they just fancied me until I realised they said it to everyone.Where I live, Kirkby in Ashfield, being called Duck is common place it's just a common greeting as in aye up mi duck, but being called mate by builders merchants and motor factors drives me nuts.
