How is that even possible? When I was into L200s I had a "new shape" 2006 that did 136 BHP and the later ones did 176 BHP and even 212 BHP, IIRC, for the final Barbarians.
And I would scoff at the "old shape" third gen from 1996 to 2005 that had what was even then a totally risible 113 BHP.

How can Volkswagen make and ship a van today that puts out less power than a 1.0L ecoboost Fiesta?

110PS is the current base spec for that engine.
In the older shape custom, the base spec was 100PS, but that was only available to fleet buyers, with the base spec for retail customers being 130PS, with options for 150, 170 and briefly 185.
Current generation is 110, 136, 150, and 170.

Most van sales will be the lowest power option.

Much the same on the Nissan Primastar...110 base model then up to 170. The 2.0 170 with a chain driven engine was an easy sell for me but fleet buyers don't really care about how things drive I would think.

Some years ago, the MD of the Milford Haven Port Authority was killed in just such a case when a local farmer's trailer 'let go'.

A builder I know killed a lady a year or two ago, when the bolts holding the tow ball to the tow bar snapped and the trailer with mini-digger on crossed into the oncoming traffic.

They don't make it. Its a Ford Transit rebadged. Same as the Amarok is actually a Ford Ranger.

To be fair, the 110 produces over 300mm of torque at 1500rpm...

My Transit camper van has the optional 100 horse engine, the standard was 85. To be fair, those 100 horses have dragged us around France & Spain many times. The van is close to its 2800kg weight limit & the power is more than adequate.

I have to drop down to 4th gear on motorway hills at 60mph to overtake a lorry. It won't hold even 70mph on some hills.
This is obviously why fuel economy is so bad. My foot is often flat to the floor
Drinks AdBlue as well.

Considering the Crafter was like a barn door and usually full of junk it was much faster, 30mpg and nicer to drive. Easier to reverse as well. And more comfortable.

I suspect the 150bhp version of the VW or Transit would be a lot nicer to drive and better on fuel.

My old Discovery 1 is only 111bhp I think on the 300tdi. That never struggled on motorway hills either.

I've got the vw 180ps with 420nm.
25mpg us about the best I get from that, 22mpg is probably my average. Although it is mostly short runs and carrying plenty of weight.

My T5.1 with 150hp with a stage 1 map (should be 170 but could be anything) gets 38mpg on a run (loaded up) and about 32 - 35 normally to work and back. (mixture of B roads and queues)

All this talk about power, my Hilux is allowed to go at 50mph and it has full power! Organisation made a decision to cut our speed, we all have trackers fitted. If we speed anywhere, admin get a notification. So far I’ve not had my collar felt, I’ve been at more than 50mph on several occasions!

A false economy to me. IMHO it doesn't improve efficiency, has little impact on fuel economy, doesn't improve the environment, and really p*****s off the drivers!

Mine was a 176, couldn't imagine driving one with any less
