Should be a 10mm nut holding the plastic connector on, then its either a 12 or 13mm nut holding the bigger wires in place under that. I think, havent changed on for a couple of years

You need to disconnect the cables to release the cover. From memory you need a 13 mm and a 10mm socket

Thanks for that, when I stuck my head underneath it wasn’t obvious how you got into it. When I get it on ramps hopefully all will become clear.

@Melvyn Best When I had a quick look it appeared to me one of those situations where to remove the wires you need to remove the cover, but to remove the cover you need to remove the wires!

Just an update, thanks for the help everyone, changed it this morning in about half an hour. Top bolt was a real pain, eventually managed to get a combination of sockets & extensions that fitted enough to get a flat at a time, 3 or 4 flats & it came out with fingers. Couldn’t get at the wiring as the aircon compressor was in the way, so dropped the starter down & did the connections then. All went back in about 5 minutes. Utube showed a ring spanner being used for the top bolt, I only have combination spanners in metric, so ordered one off the web, that didn’t work, couldn’t get it near the bolt at all!

One of many MK6,s horrible jobs..even worse on the RWD, ive got removing the front end on mine down to about 30 mins now and its well worth it for any deep reach jobs on the MK6.

I like the way T4 VW does it, unlatch the front grill & rad & lift it forward, brilliant idea, Ford take note!
