Transformer Wanted

Not really workshop equipment so popped it in here.

I'm looking for a transformer to make a power supply with. I'd like 240V on the input and anything under 16V on the output. The lower the better really and logic level would be amazing but I'm not too fussy ^_^

Now here's the rub. It needs to be rated for 20A or better continuous so it's gonna be a bit heavy!

I'd prefer not to use a toroidal but it's not a deal breaker.

Does anyone have anything? I am, of course, looking to pay for this and not on the scrounge.

Could you use a PC PSU? 12v and 5v at huge amps. Only need to bridge two wires in the ATX connector to get it to start.

The best I could russle up would be 55v from a power tool transformer.

Yeah I'd gone down the switch mode route and it's not really doing it for me.

I'm making a pyrography tool for my wife for Xmas and I'm wanting to make this barnyard simple.

PWM on a wee microcontroller running a MOSFET. Just gonna do the rectification myself.

Why the objection to Toroidal?
I have a couple of Toroid transformers but I think they're more in the 25-35VAC range.

Mainly the difficulty in mounting Matt. I've got a pretty (read small) box to put it in.

IF I still have it, there might be a 240-15(ish) toroid that I'm sure is .3kva+ hiding in one of my 'come in useful' piles - I've been told to sort some of the piles out quick-smart so if nobody else comes up with anything I'll let you know?

Excellent spot Matt. I'd been checking but nothing was surfacing.

Perhaps too big at 500VA, but I shall watch and see. May have a word on the postage though lol.

I have a mightymig 100 here, works as it should but no use to me anymore. It's been out in the rain for a while but still start and welds so the tranny is good.

No idea on voltage out though, just know it has 2 voltage settings and all the giblets for rectifying but getting to Scotland might be costly

Lol BB, whilst I love the idea I fear that would be maybe just a tad overpowered

The UPS donor is one I hadn't considered and does open up more avenues for me, cheers for the idea

How about a dimmable lighting transformer? then you could do away with the PWM circuitry.

Also trying to do this whilst skint so doing a bit of a use up from the store cupboard. Had these bits for a while, they need to earn their keep.
