It would be quite useful for first time welders to have a reference set of settings to use as a starting point for different thicknesses of steel. The wire feed rate would be easy - just squeeze the trigger for a few seconds, see how much wire comes out, then adjust as necesary.
Is there a sensible way to find equivalent power settings between machines? I've tried measuring open circuit voltage between torch and earth (22V to 35V approx depending on setting). Would this vary between welders?
Otherwise is it sensible to look at the minimum and maximum amp output of a machine, count the settings, and assume the settings are linear? Probably not again as you'd want the settings to be closer together at the lower end.
Any thoughts on how to measure a power setting?
