Thread nicked from WW. These look a handy gizmo that i can now think of hundreds of times i would have used one. Suprised that i have never seen them before.

Anyone ever used them/seen them before?

Seen small ones, not upto 14,18,22,26....though.

Other sort, centre punch with various sized bushes.

Theres an identical bit of kit used for dowelling in timber cabinet work that I must have seen 25 years ago. Never thought of that for steel.

I've seen the ones that come with the cheapy dowel kits, thats what i thought it was originally, but obviously these are a lot harder.

Ah. Top idea. Maybe with a washer welded on.

Mightn't need to weld it on, dont forget they are tapered Push a suitable washer over it, and use it, washer probably wedge onto it....

HI Paul,
we used these daily toolmaking we call them backspotters i suspect every body has a different name for them.

We also use modified grub screws to do the same thing with tapped holes, we mofiy them by turning the end to 90' inc the put a small saw cut in the chamfer (to one side) so we can use them on blind holes, screw them in with a 6" rule - if you have many to do we set them all at the same height using a bit of GFS with a 3 or 4 mm step ground in.

I have a set of imperial transfer punches I picked up in the states for about a fiver from Harbour Frieght, and I have a selection of threaded ones (which I have always known as "marking points") that I've made up over the years, usually from caps screws.
