Sounds like you need to hire better sparkies.

I could say the same for ground workers, chippies, plumbers, drywallers, plasterers, painters, brickies, fire/intruder alarm installers, data cablers, shop fitters etc. Plenty of idiot site managers and architects too.
I've worked with them all at one point or another, there was no shortage of numpties to go around.
Also worked with some good ones too - admittedly harder to find. but those are the ones to keep hold of.

A lot of it also depends on the relationship you build with them, and knowing how to get the best out of them.
No different to any other industry really.

After doing domestic gas, commercial gas, lpg, and F-gas I found the 17th edition quite an easy thing to pass. I admit I never updated to the 18th but my life had changed by then, I did get my Mocopa though, that has been handy a few times.....

was doing y and s plan or any other plan 45 years ago/ can do em in my sleep. i used to get 15 quid an hour subbying when others working for the same outfit go a tenner . you get what you pay for . most of em needed hand feeding

I will say this, a good sparky who can wire a plan is a cut above the usual house bashers

Is he arrogant, has a hugely inflated sense of his own ability and importance, terrible at time keeping and struggles with anything that isn't new or straightforward, and unable to tidy up?

If yes then crack on, if no then he isn't right for the job

@Welderpaul your mate has loads of different schemes he can choose but assuming he's got to earn a living at the same time as doing a course he may have to do it in the evenings, that takes a lot of willpower to do after a days work for months on end and it's not easy whatever the plumber says.
@bigegg did it recently so will know the in's and outs of it all better than me as I did mine in the 80's...
House bashing is a sxxx way to earn a living and is for chancers and young men / wimmins as you spend most of your time in lofts or groping around under floors
Commercial or industrial is better. Don't let him do one of those 5 hour/day/week courses (delete as necessary depending on how much money he has to waste) as they are mostly just rip offs.
A City & Guilds qualification is what he needs but I can't keep up with the course codes as they keep changing them. 236 part 1 & 2 and 2391 testing and inspection is what I have plus the 18th edition will give him what he needs.
Wish him good luck and tell him to take no sxxt from plumbers!

I started down this path 2019/20, but C-19 f**** it all up.

College 3 days a week (2 theory, 1 practical) C & G level 2 year 1
College 3 days a week mostly theory C & G level 3 year 2
NVQ work book roughly 18 months to complete - need to find employment for this bit
AM2 exam

If you're self financing, it's bloody expensive. I did full time as I was retired (not reached SPA yet), wasn't too bad student wise (16 & 17 year olds, not all who were interested in the course).

College will have changed to T levels by the summer.
