any one make trailors? do they have to be tested before selling? if so how much roughly does this service cost? cheers.

The best person to ask would be your insurance broker as it will be part of your public liability policy anyway.

If you could follow established plans - such as those offered by indespension a few years back - you'd probably be on the right lines.

i think that the department for transport would advise you on this and will confirm if it applies to commercial or domestic type trailers aswell

From memory, small car type domestic trailers are category O1.
These will require compulsory type approval from 29th October 2010 for 'new types' ie if you start making trailers on or after that date, or you add a new trailer to the range you are already building they must be type approved.
Then, from 29th October 2012 ALL newly made trailers of category O1, no matter how long you have been making that model, will require type approval - No type approval certificate = no sale.
Even the little Erde type things you can get from Halfords are included.

To confirm my previous post, I have looked up the vehicle categories concerning trailers which are as follows:

Category O1 - trailers with a max mass not exceeding 750kg

Category O2 - trailers with a max mass exceeding 750kg, but not exceeding 3500kg

Category O3 - trailers with a max mass exceeding 3500kg, but not exceeding 10,000kg

Category O4 - trailers with a max mass exceeding 10,000kg

If you manufacture your trailer from start to finish, the dates in my previous post apply to all the above Categories.
If you buy in a trailer chassis and body it, the dates are different.

i bought a conway trailer tent this year and have used it 3/4 times already,on the last occasion we used it,the canvas suffered quite a bit of damage,and to be totally honest due to the price of repair it just was'nt viable,so i am thinking of turning it into a camping trailer,as every thing is in place etc.the trailer itself is plated from the manufacturer,what would be the situation concerning this type of conversion.with the new legislation

so long as you don't exceed the maximum weight of the original trailer tent everthing will be ok

if it has brakes you should keep them in good order (any trailer over 750kg should have them)

The 750 Kg is the weight of the trailer & load.

plate has 450kg,i assume this is gross weight,by the time i strip every thing out this will make it a lot lighter,i take it that this will not be affected by the incoming legislation.

its a conway camargue,no brakes,but tows like a dream.

I think that model has 10" wheels so it will have no problems carrying 450kg

you have to remember that the max weight is the load & trailer

by the time i rip the guts out of it,it will just have the aluminium sides,which i just want to add marine ply to the sides to give it rigidity,intend to keep the detachable hob and sink as it is part of the trailer,but will fit nicely in our large frame tent.will take it to our local weighbridge to get the unladen weight.
