Trailers again!

My renewal from Saga has just come through with the following alteration

"Glossary of terms

Trailer

A single-axled road vehicle of standard manufacturer's construction towed by a motor vehicle adhering to all towing regulations and fitted with a standard 50mm towball, excluding mechanically propelled vehicles, caravans, trailer tents, vehicle transporters food bars and horse boxes."

Doesn't leave much choice!

Might be worth checking your policies as they are renewed.

when u see half of the sh ,.,.,.te being towed around and trailers on the side of the road with wheels that have fell off im, not suprised insurance and the laws have been tightened up

We had one in to have a bit of ally chequer bolted in yesterday, pushing the bit of ally into place broke some of the 'welds' Whole thing was about 25mm out of suare too!
Bit of ally sheet must have cost £300!

if you make a steel frame trailer with no special bits ie axle with purpose built suspension
usual draw bar and so on then i dont see a problem it doesnt mention commercially built
and you are the manufacturer

i think its a bit of a grey area im sure we will see clarification as time goes by

I got a trailer off Freecycle where the welds came apart.

A friend had a box trailer with Indespension units bolted directly onto the chipboard floor.

Is it built by a standard manufacturer or is it standard construction that a manufacturer would use.

Some poor sod is going to make a lawyer rich finding out the hard way.

It means they want to cover only the sort of small box trailer that you buy from Halfords (or similar accessory stores), say 3 or 4 feet square, 12" high sides. The sort that only get used for carrying goods of small value, or for taking rubbish, like hedge trimmings, to the tip.
They are also giving notice, without being explicit, that claims involving trailers will be scrutinised closely, and may not be 100% successful.

If you use a trailer of other purposes then take the hint and go elsewhere when renewal time comes around.

while we're bashing DIY stuff, I bought cheap a official production stamped out sheet tipping trailer that had started to distort into a weird lozenge shape when you put near the rated weight in it, which scared the original owner a bit hence the price.
I had a look at the construction and it didn't seem to be designed with much of a safety factor so probably someone overloaded it slightly and damaged it. Id be embarrased if I knocked out something that near the mark myself. So much for designing things with a large safety factor inbuilt.
A actual drawbar linked back to the axle proper and extra reinforcement later in crucial places and now its probably illegal here as its "modified" ...

My daughter has the same problem, she has been towing Horse boxes for 15 years and this year she got her renewel and made sure it still covered her for a trailer. Three weeks after renewel that silly Bulldog from the advert send her a T&C amendment that changed condition of her towing meaning she can not longer haul livestock unless extra insurance is taken out.They want an extra £220.55, so she can continue towing. After much wrangling and the old " We reserve the right to change terms and condition with 30 days notice". Why did they wait until after renewel?. If she was to cancel her insurance now she will lose over half her premium. Talk about insurance sharks. So watch which companies you deal with. Biggest is not always the most honest.

I towed a car shell on plant trailer from penzance to inverness. checked my licence covered it, and that all weights were fine for the car etc. never occured to me to check insurance.
Made it in one piece, but still. oops.

hmmnn might have to double check my insurances, I tow a single axle home made trailer & an ifor williams twin axle plant trailer, with an estate car & a campavan [not at the same time I might add!!] ,two different insurance firms & I told them both I was towing a trailer & they said it was o-k??
