How many old bits do you need to make it a modification rather than a new build?

I built one from a 106 Peugeot axle
Self contained with dampers
It was unbelievably good to tow
Used to carry a trails bike on it

John that would be great if you could find it.

The one good thing about the torsion system on a 106 and 306 is that it is fully height adjustable so il be able to set it at the optimum height.

Pretty sure you'd be able to find and buy a decent enough trailer for sale for less money than the test - never mind when it fails for using non-reversing car brakes.

I thought this when we damaged the current one its a 1 tone capacity two wheeler, but struggling to fine a replacement, plenty of Garden rubbish types and large ones but very little in between, last one I just re bodied an existing trailer

How do leaf spring axles get around this? Why would they not bounce off the road as most wee trailers have no shocks.

I used to just let the tyres down a bit and pump them back up for a heavy load.

I posed the idea of using the original drum brakes...I was educated that that wasnt an option therefore it wouldnt be a feature of the trailer as it will be small enough that they wouldnt be required.

The IVA is £70 from memory.
The axle/tyres/wheels all free.
Until this morning the frame was free as well.
Hitch new - £50.00
Lights & Wiring new - £30.00
Sides/ floor etc new - say £150.00
Mudguards - say £50.00
Paint etc - £0.00 already have it from other projects
TOTAL - £350.00

This is as much a fun project as it is getting a cheap trailer.
Having browsed Gumtree and Facebook there is not a lot in the sub £400 bracket that is in anyway shape or form any good and that wouldnt require more money spent on it.

EDIT; Also the likelihood of any sub £400 trailer having ever been tested is slim.

I'd think I'd weigh the axle beam, complete with wheels first. Then work out the weight of the steel you need for the frame, similar for the wood. Then look up the un-braked towing capacity of your car . . . subtract one from the other . . .

If its an old trailer, pre-requirement for testing . . . like the one in my garden waiting for me to get it on ebay . . .

It'll be a single axle wee garden trailer so no brakes needed really.
However this is a drum axle so the handbrake works by cable. Any reason it couldn't be utilised as an overrun brake with the appropriate hitch?

Yes the efficiency is too low to pass regs.

Self built trailer must pass an IVA before being used.

if the wheels and suspension are older than when the new law came out who is to know when it was built my trailer is on indespension units with 13 inch mini wheels. i built it 20 years ago but could rebuild it tomorrow who is to know

The trailer detectives. In all seriousness I got pulled by vosa with my homemade single axle trailer behind my van. I had well over a ton of bricks on it. And because I had tyres rated at 915kgs and working brakes and lights they were happy and sent me on my way.
