The old sheep trailer I had was a single axle and perfectly balanced. I would carry about 1.5 tons of pallet blocks in it. No jockey wheel and I could pick it up with 1 hand and spin it around. When towing there was about zero downforce - in fact you could hear the coupling rocking on the hitch and yet it was totally stable and never gave me any trouble.
The worst journey ever was towing a Bateson hydraulic tilt twin axle trailer on the motorway behind my Discovery. The wheel ruts were a nightmare and I spent the whole journey trying to avoid them.
I thought it was the trailer at fault. After this happening a few times I changed the front tyres on the Discovery - perfect never a problem again! There was nothing visibly wrong with the tyres either but they obviously has an effect!
