Trailer build question

That is why I built this - mind you if I had known the cost implications of a single 3500kg axle...........
I had a bargain - paid £500 for an axle and drawbar that costs £4000 new. Company had taken off a Generator to truck mount it. Original tyres still had the knobbly bits! BUT - the wheels and tyres were only rated to 2500kg. I had to have custom wheels made and go up to lorry tyres 17.5"
Forklift there just in case - first time using the winch and ramps. That clicker press weighs around 1100kg.
Tows like a dream - payload 2500kg.

When I built from scratch ( renovated for legal reasons) the trailer for my trials car I took the easy route and completed the main structure ,less mudguards, and loaded the car onto it . I then use a piece of 1" bar which I placed under the trailer in various places until i had the required nose weight . This gave me the position of the tyre centres and the rest was easy. It towed great even at illegal speeds. I know it was only a single axel but I recon the same would work on a twin or at least give you a ball park idea. Over the years i have built 9 bike trailers using the same suck it and see system.

That falls firmly into the 'why didn't I think of that' category.
Although I did something vaguely similar with an unbraked single axle '750kg' home made trailer that I inherited. I loaded it with carefully arranged layers of bricks of known weight until the suspension and tyres 'looked right', and was still within the load limits marked on the tyres. It was a load of only c.500kg from memory. I didn't have access to weighing devices other than SWMBO's bathroom scales to check that the nose weight was sensible.
It was a surprisingly small number of layers compared to the depth of the load bed and gave me a good guide to how far to fill with sand, soil or other loose materials.
