I don't believe there's anything stopping you having chains as long as you have the required by law breakaway cable tied to the brakes?
That's my understanding of it, I may be wrong in that though, but I'll keep using chains.
With both if the trailer comes off the brakes come on which lets you know and the chain makes if follow you to a halt.
Does anyone know 1st hand of an instance when a trailer got loose due to something actually breaking?
I suspect very few breakaways are due to mechanical failure of well maintained components, the vast majority being due to operator ignorance, laziness or plain old human error.
