Trade in my old tigs??? Where? - Quick!

Hi guys, I have 3 Miller tigs, all are 'kind-of-ok' but could do with servicing and some knowledgeable TLC, which I have neither the time nor the skill nor the inclination for - too many other tools to get sorted.

Is there anywhere in the UK where I can trade these in and put them towards a new, modern unit of good quality?

I have 2 x miller Dialarcs and a Miller synchro 375. All with water coolers if memory serves, 2 with pedals.

Any help appreciated. the 375 just crapped out on me and I was supposed to complete a job today, so I need to sort this pronto.

Thoughts on a suitable replacement for the Synchro 375 also appreciated.

You could try somewhere like Westermans, I've never used their services so I can't comment but they do refurbished equipment.

Many dealers will take old equipment in part exchange but whether or not you might be better off flogging them on eBay is open to debate. I've dealt with Westermans and found them to be extremely helpful though I've always been buying rather than selling. New replacements for that size of machine are going to cost a pretty penny as I'm sure you realise so again you could look at Westermans for second hand or bite the bullet and get in touch with Matt!

Hi, thanks for the inputs. I guess I was thinking I could trade them in to someone who could do the servicing before selling them on, rather than selling something that needs a good looking at on ebay and not getting its value back.

I know, modern units command some money! I just had a look around, Looks like I'll have to limit myself to 250A, and even then I have no idea how to fund it! I just need a reliable machine that works well, all the time. Migatronic PI 250 AC/DC - anyone? there are some nice lorches for similar money. Do we get a forum discount from Matt??? Ex demo perhaps?

Well, one has never worked, that I have seen anyway, and has no pedal.

I don't think they're worth 3 times that - maybe 25% more, but I have to figure if I have the time / skill etc, and I just don't.

I called Weldmet, and he said I should bite the guys hand off. I'm starting to agree...

Give Hampshire welding a try. They might take in your machines in part exchange for a new ac/dc tig. They sell various machines including a range of portamig AC/DC tigs.

Thanks Rosepuds - Andy from Hantsweld is calling me back in the morning! They are good guys. Don't think I'll be going for a Portamig from a Miller Synchro 375, but I'll see what else they have.

Ok, all done, thanks guys, took a 10 foot trailer FULL of welders up to the Midlands yesterday (threw in an old BOC Lynxpac 200 mig as well) - must have weighed nearly 1.5 tonnes all up, and came hope with £850 in my pocket a new machine that rattled around in the footwell of my car. Damn. Thats progress I guess!

Bit of a nerve-wracking step down in max amps, but I rarely got near the top with the other one anyway, and certainly a step up in other ways (workshop space not least!).
