If you have a 7.5 t lorry, they often unladen weigh in at 5 tonnes, if your train weight is 12t you can tow 7?

In that case i don't believe the trailer laden weight could be heavier than the unladen weight of the lorry so in your example the max laden weight of the trailer could be 5 tonnes. But this then would exceed the 12t limit

But I think you would need category C1E on your licence and a lorry that has a max train weight specified on the plating certificate

That's always been the case with cpc. They made it over-complicated.

I would call dvsa,if you're honest with what you're hoping to do, they're usually very helpful.

It's when you try and swerve the rules they're not so nice!

It makes no difference. All that matters is that your job isn't to deliver the plant, but to take it and use it.

Doesn't the "hire or reward " clause make any difference ? This is where it is confusing me.

It sounds like a bad law badly worded that a good barrister could blow to bits in the dock. I bet they won't contest a hire or reward clause. I think what is meant is if someone else made something and I delivered it or if I leant them my pu and trailer for hire. Hence borrows are fine

When I was in the Civil Service we were told that to word things in simple English so that there were clearly understandable to everybody. Seems since I retired the government has gone back to gobbledygook

That's still there for communications. Law isn't communications though.
