In that case i don't believe the trailer laden weight could be heavier than the unladen weight of the lorry so in your example the max laden weight of the trailer could be 5 tonnes. But this then would exceed the 12t limitIf you have a 7.5 t lorry, they often unladen weigh in at 5 tonnes, if your train weight is 12t you can tow 7?

But I think you would need category C1E on your licence and a lorry that has a max train weight specified on the plating certificate
