If you look at any galvanic series table, Aluminium should corrode sacrificially to Iron....in practice it doesnt because the Oxide forms on the Aluminium surface and protects the Aluminium. I think that the presence of Iron in the water can interfere with the Oxidation process and reduce its effectiveness but Im not sure how severe this is....I suspect, not very, because otherwise we would be hearing of the issues.
Ive read that Aluminium Radiators are greener because they heat up quicker....does that really use less fuel....I should expect the difference between steel and Aluminium "heating up" times to be small and would equalise when cooling down...????

Sadly these days we are looking at 0.1% savings on heating systems so factors like that come into play

Anybody who's ever owned a Series Land Rover or a Defender will be acquainted with what happens when aluminium (well Birmabright an alloy of aluminium and magnesium) panels come into contact with mild steel chassis or fastenings. Where the steel is galvanised less of a problem.

i would have thought that its more that aluminium is more conductive? so the outside of the radiator gets hotter faster, and transfers more heat from the water to the surrounding air?

Same as Corten steel, the Angel of the North is Corten, it gives it the unmistakable colour. A surface layer oxidises and then becomes the protective coating.

Often wondered why they don’t paint the sheet piling that are put in motorway embankments, now I know. Yet another schoolday .
