I have a draper 50 to 130 amp welder and have ordered some 2.5 mm rods, i am hoping to weld some 3mm mild steel piping to make a roll cage for a kit car, any help would be appreciated, thanks, keith
Hi Keith, welcome to the forum. If you have a look on miller's website there's some really handy calculators on there. Is the rollcage for road use or for competition use? If it's for competition use the regulations are quite stringent regarding what ttype of tubing etc. Don't forget to show us some pics of your project .
If you really get into welding I'd suggest getting yourself a small mig, they're so much easier to use than stick with a lot less post-cleaning to do too. Something around 150A is ideal. Stick is a very good mode of welding but sometimes isn't easy for a novice, especially on tricky joints. The bay of E is always awash with used ones at very respectable prices, just be sure to check the minimum current as well as the maximum, a lot of 'nearly new' ones end up on there due to the fact they start at a ridiculously high 40A or even more. Avoid anything woth the letters SIP in the name though .
cheers , i have a little mig thing i bought first , waste of money , it has 2 settings , low and high and i dont know what amps they are, its gassless but only good for sheeting etc, very poor,,,
Yes Andy, afaik you also have to provide inspection holes so the scrutineers can check the tubing to see that it meets the relevant specifications i.e no seam. One way round it people have found is to drill the inspection holes in the seam so it can't be seen from the inside.
Not a problem for Poolmaster though, his is just for fun.
