you can usally tell when they go funny, my 1/2 norbar is torque rulet wrench it varies from a bit over, to lots over. but my halfods ones are shockingly good and still feel right
yes definitely! im a calibration tech and nothing is more important than a yearly check as they go out of spec faster than you think!
the problem with torque wrenches is they dont always wear evenly over time and as such the scale is no longer linear and its this kind of wear that causes the biggest problems.
ie at 5nm it may well be 5nm but at 100nm it might be 80 then at 150 could be 160nm. there is no fix for this so may as well be chucked or fixed at one setting.
if the wrench wears evenly and stays linear a calibration tech can adjust a decent wrench to bring it back into calibration or if not adjustable give you a new scale to tell you how far out it may be.
definitely worth getting it tested! it really doesn't take long either if you can find a reputable tester.
I have a snap on torque wrench probably 15 years old left it set at 85lbf 5 years ish as I only used it for wheel nuts. When I eventually had it calibrated it was spot on.
Well looks like after about 8 years I have managed to damage both sykes pickivant torque wrenches as they have plastic handle''s and wear out so now just slip rather than actually adjusting.
