There's one of these at a local auction -
Its 3ph. I dont have 3ph. I do, however, have a large ish VFD...
Im wondering - on a compressor, could you slow down the motor to achieve the same pressure, but with less CFM?
Ive got two compressors currently - one that looks similar to the one above, belt drive, 1ph, that makes a marginally, but not significantly, invasive "chugging" sound, and a FIAC direct drive, which, nice as the compressor is, its loud...
Im thinking it could down rate the one above, and replace the FIAC.
I know that you could do this with physical pulley size, as its not the motor that makes the racket, but im wondering if it would be possible on a VFD for "general" use, and then just dial it up when more air was needed?
I suspect not? Im thinking if the motor ran slower, with the same load applied, it would suck more amps, and the fan would spin slower, and the magic smoke would, ultimately, escape. I mean, im pretty sure the answer is that, but i figured id, hopefully, ask all the same!
