torch liner

right, doing my head in now i was doing some welding earlier today and had a nice run then all of a sudden its starts to feel like the torch is vibrating and i can feel the wire dragging. its been doing it off and on since i started using the welder.

now common sense says the liner needs changing, but its a new liner! it's got a new tip on it too.

dont always do it but it's a pain when it happens.


any suggestions before i go buying another new liner?

Check that the spool isn't too tight, and that the wire is feeding off the reel properly, sometimes they are poorly wound and get tangled, keep the torch lead straight if you can, it all helps.

i have already tried all of the abouve. could be the way the wire is wound though.

Is there a liner in the swaneck seperate to the main liner?
You could try feeding about 8" out of the tip and then disengauging the feed pressure roller, then try pulling the 8" of wire to see if there is any resistance or try the "bag of rice" test. Search for bag of rice to see what I mean. It was a test someone with a sus liner done by attaching about 3lbs of rice to get spool to turn, replaced liner the 1/2lb of rice wold turn it.

It is a new steel liner, isn't it? I've known plastic liners develop faults after only a few hours work.
As Mike mentions, take a check of the liner in the swan neck. One of these:

The OP should have told us what machine it is to save any confusion but if it's his Romarc one then I believe it has a euro torch which means it won't have a swan neck spring liner.

its one full steel liner right to the tip. goes though the diffuser.

i did take a quick look at my wire reel and it is a bit messy wound, so it could be that.

Some reels are so badly wound they flatly refuse to feed properly. I had one went like that about 3/4 through it, a new reel and all was perfect again.

i take it back. seems its used up the messy part and its tightly packed. must have just unwound a bit when i pulled the line out the other day to check it.



i will hang one of my weight on the wire and see how free it is.

just hanged some weights on the wire with everything slackened off.

took 1.75kg or 3.85lbs to get the wire moving, seems a little stiff?

That's way too much!
That's with the feed rollers disengaged and the spool tensioner not done up too tight?
Take the contact tip out and try it again, at least that will eliminate a bad tip.

both were already done. i tried the old liner and it took 1.25kg instead and it come out, so was slightly better

how much should it take with a decent liner?

think it's sorted. 0.5kg moves it now there was some crap in the guide stem on the socket.

there is a slight bit of play where the torch connector meets the euro socket on the welder, even though its tight. could be fairly normal though.

but yeah all seems good. i will re-tension everything now

I've found that fairly normal with the locking ring tight, the body still moves, shouldn't be a problem as the locking ring is holding the important metal/metal contact tight.

make sure there is no dust or rust on the wire or it can bung a liner up very quickly

It's probably a twisted liner.

If you have an allan key for the grommet in the diffuser then un-do it and give the wire a try.

if it's still bound up then take the gun off and undo the liner lock nut.

it might untwist at this point.

if it doesn't then pull the liner completely out and then re-insert it that should un-do the twist in the liner.

I would also check the liner for kinks in it as too much of a kink will bind up the wire.

Also don't walk on or let stuff fall onto the gun lead as it will also kink the liner and bind up the wire and you'll need to buy a new liner.
