torch angle

Hello all,as a novice to welding,the more I read,the more confused I get,it seems as though different guides all contradict each other.One booklet I have(S.I.P) gives the torch angle at 70 degrees,the Clark manual gives 45 degrees,and others I have seen on different forums give 35 degrees,I would have thought it would be the same angle throughout,who is right? or do I just ignore the angle completely and do my own thing? Could be they are referring to the torch handle; the difference due to the angled tip.

Generally you want the torch shroud at about 70 degrees for best penetration and weld bead shape.

Thanks,will try them all,and see which works best,but as the "mig welding plain and simple guide" seems to be the most authoritive,and easily understood,(which is the one that advises a 70 degree slant,) and the fact that you also advise that,I think I will ignore the other guides and stick with that, Thanks,Phil.

The 45* probably refers to the angle of when welding a 90* fillet weld, I.e; bisect the angle between the plates.
