Yeah, I keep meaning to invest in a 3/8 torque wrench and tbh my 1/2" Sykes Pickavant one has seen better days as the stupid printed scale is wearing off.

Halfords' 3/8" torque wrench from their Professional range is great - the torque range is nice and low at 6-45lb ft., which is ideal for all the areas where its small size is also required. Also comes with a calibration certificate so you know it's bang on across the scale. Plus it recently got best buy in a Practical Classics test. At £49.99, well worth it.

Sorry it's gone again - it was giving Malc a migraine! no, Si was asking how to get pics into a post but he's worked it out now...I did a long and complicated explanation of how I did it but Si has since explained to me how my mac works so it's much easier now! (still not sure how he knew what to do but couldn't do it ) and Cappy was referring to me not being able to insert animated smilies..got that sussed too! so yippee

Oh this brings tears to my eyes.

I started collecting really good tools since 1993. By last year, I had built up about 6000 quid worth of Snap On tool, a bout 250 quid's worth Britool and Facoms bits. Some scum broke into my casa, beat my little doggy up, nicked my 4X4, used it to rip the door off my garage, nicked the tools, a supermoto I was building and multiplied off into the sunset

Anyway, thanks for the listening-therapy.

My heartfelt recomendation is to buy the BEST and but ONLY exactly what you need. Snap On, Britool, Facom, Knipex, Stahl Wille would be at the top of my list in terms of quality and name (others opinions might vary). Each maker tends to have peculiar specialities, and I would buy *just* what they were each best known for. eg Snap on for sockets/spanners/screwdrivers, Knipex for pliers etc.

When I say buy only what you need, I mean buy *A* Socket, so you can buy the best, not 20 for a quid. Lets say for me, It would be cheaper for me to look at my motorbike and buy only the the socket sizes I needed to take it apart at a major survice - 14, 12, 10mm deep socket, six point for strength at about £15.00 each, 8mm S-O spanner for bleed nipples and carbs, Facom hex keys in replacement sizes for tool kit. etc. Hope that makes sense.

With the UK pound being how it. It may be worthwhile to go to the US and get a poo load of Snappies and othersuch.

You have my sympathy mate. Ten years ago some bugger cleared out all my cabinetmaking tools. A whole lot of quality stuff. I don't do cabinetmaking any more!

You're confused snowcat? I'm just bemused now....why were you asking about 'giant dog' in this thread? I thought you were referring to the welding rat that made a brief celebrity type appearance in my signature (ta dah!!!). ceraphim (what does that mean then?),you could do a lot worse than looking on ebay at `facom man`. i`m a vehicle tech by trade and i`ve bought tools off this guy for years,(he actually comes to where i work,but does quite a lot on the ebay thing) but he does other makes as well as facom and if he thinks that something is`nt worth buying he`ll tell you, ie `you`re better off with this rather than that` and any probs i`ve had,(very very few),he`s always sorted them no probs.reasonable prices too.
i will say that you should always buy the best tools that you can afford cos quality tools do help you to not hurt yourself (learned the hard way when i was starting out+no cash).
if you look+are intersted in any stuff,if you want to pm me,i`ll give you his no. so at least you can speak to him about what you might be buying.

ps apparently,the lifetime g`tee on snap on only applies if you submit your breakages to the supplying dealer (if they want to get picky,that is!),but most dealers will renew for you.

Thats the lad - Facom Man. I second the above poster in recomendation. Pretty decent guy, I bought a few adjustable wrenches from him about 3 years ago on ebay. No worries.

Snap On is never going to win any customer-care accolades, I should think. A bit worrying to hear that they will not honour the warranty w/out conditions. What happens if the client moves around? muppets. The kit does feel good in the hands - I am not sure if it is just psychological though. I have heard Teng Tools are good, have a ratcheting wrench by them, no complaints.

What's the general opinion on Teng if you don't mind me asking?
Price seems much less than Snappy. But how does the quality compare?
And is the lifetime warranty worth something? Will they actually exchange stuff if its broken/worn out?

Local tool shop has a good selection of Teng stuff and pretty attractive prices. I've got a whole load of tools that need replacing.

Teng is very good stuff, used by a lot of professionals but not as well known as snap on. Teng's UK distrubutor is Toolstars who also do other quality brands like Limit/Momento/Race

Never yet bust any teng gear and I am slowly replacing all my worn gear now with teng and not halfrauds.

Without causing offence to Mig, I associate tool breakage with misuse. I am really clumsy and heavy handed, but I have yet to break any of my kit. I substitute a breaker bar/spanner for a ratchet if anything I try to remove is more than about 30lbft. Same treatment with sockets, I would use a 6 point socket instead of a 12pt. I guess this is part of the inbuilt safety in using expensive tools, if it pops, its gonna cost a bomb, so I go easy on the vorsprung durch gorilla teknic.
