I clearly remember thinking what a size the garage was when we came to view the house many years ago, the garage was completely empty at the time. But over the years it got smaller and smaller, that and the roof raining with condensation each winter finally made me extend it sideways and put on a normal pitched roof.

When we moved in, 3 years ago, there was a 2.5x garage in the back garden and a standard one off to the side.
A previous owner had owned taxis...

Wife insisted before we even committed to buying the house that the big garage was getting knocked down and we were having grass in the back garden (I know, right?)

It was a sad day when the builders knocked down that garage.

Whenever I see a shipping container I think it would make a half decent workshop, they're about the same width as a garage but up to 40' long. You could fit all your tools & machines in it and when you move house, you can get it moved to your new house. Would probably be cold in the winter though.

Not quite 40' long but still very nice, a clever use of the space. I do however have 2 problems with it.
Firstly, it's missing a lot of the stuff from the wishlist (Mill, compressor, welders, plasma, anvil, steel bench, etc).
Secondly, Norm had a load of tools in a lorry and that didn't end well.

Here's a 40-footer I designed a few years back: it was fitted out as a mobile darkroom for a client laying pipelines across Russia. Shockingly poor picture scanned from an A5-size catalogue as the originals have long since disappeared. It had the darkroom itself, office, film viewing area, kitchen, lobby, drying area, bunk room with two bunks and a plant room containing a diesel genny, air conditioning and water heater (bottom left pic.).
In hindsight it only had about 50mm of insulation so was probably a bit nippy once north of Rostov-on-Don

Maker, I do have a scopemeter but mine's an old Philips PM93, you might find one of those reasonably cheaply.
Not much on my wishlist: a single- or 2-post lift and a Bridgeport S1 or similar mill. Might be large but probably more compact than combined volume of the two I currently have

What exactly is your job? From what I can make out from your posts, you work with radiation shielding, CNC machines and mobile darkrooms.

What exactly is your job?

Christ alone knows All I know is, I'm in my 22nd year with the company and I fancy a change... but I can't find anything that doesn't involve working in a factory and/or doing shifts.
Ideally I'd like 3 or 4 days a week, just enough to keep a trickle of money coming in whilst leaving me free the rest of the week to twiddle with tools, wave a welding torch, lark about with lathes and monkey with mills. I can even fit a 3-pin plug and draw boxes on AutoCAD
Not bad for a bank clerk...

The nearest to that I've ever used myself was called the LIXI; it was a hand-held real-time imaging system that used a live Gadolinium isotope as the radiation source and gave an on-screen x-ray (effectively) of anything you stuck in the beam... including, in the case of our apprentice, your hand

The other technique that works is called Z-backscatter and is used in those whole-body airport scanners that caused a lot of controversy when it was suggested the operator could use it for ogling wimmins' bums, nips and fannies
