Years ago I was building the inside for a campervan. One of the indispensable things I used was a pencil. I had a few spread around the garage so I could always find one.
Throughout the day I would lose all of them. Over a few weeks I convinced myself that they must have been falling and rolling under stuff. I reckon I bought about 30 pencils over this time to replace the lost ones.
The mystery was solved when I came to mow the lawn and discovered loads of chewed up pencils on the lawn.
We had a puppy that was coming in the garage to get some fuss, but unseen by me, always left with a pencil and chewed them up on the lawn.
Never trust a dog, no matter how cute.

That has to be it! There is no other explanation.

After 1 solid hour of looking for my digital calipers again on Saturday I realised something. Even at £5 an hour of my time im out more than the cost of the calipers every couple of months. So I ordered another pair from amazon prime for next day sod that. Hopefully the aliens don't displace both or ill just keep buying them.

I can just imagine someone clearing your estate, in years to come, saying: "How many calipers does one man need?".

Two things I’m always careful to clean, box and put away after use are precision engineering measuring tools (emphasis on the precision, I’ve got about 40 tape measures and can never find one, even if it’s on my belt) and morse taper or similar tooling.

how has there been this many replies and not one mention of a 10mm socket/spanner!!

I lost a 10mm spanner in my front yard.
Right where I was using it, it just vanished.
I'd gone in and come out again, then was tidying up and I realised the spanner wasn't there.

My 10mm sockets have tried to escape me multiple times but haven't managed it - I hunt them out of the engine bay like a bloodhound because I can't bear to add to the 'lost a 10mm' statistic!

At home I generally find everything enough fast but at my workplace I have to seek everywhere to find a caliper or a tape measure and remember that it's a machine shop

I did mention those in the similar 'can't find stuff' thread, it's astonishing with the whole vanishing 10mm spanner thing, I'll have to buy half a dozen or something and strew them around liberally.

ahh. One step ahead. I made a box for it, screwed it to the wall, Labelled it as well..............Then it broke!
