Tools I hate

This tool i have is so bad i kept it for future generations to marvel at...bought a claw hammer at a sunday market about 10 years ago and when you use it it chips away at the edges at hypersonic speeds too must get some pics up of it

Who was it that had a particular size of Estwing hammer that they didn't so much hate, as was hated by?

Good for holding things about to be welded and not a lot more.
Best tool in the box, when you're in the boot, three cars up in the air in the scrapyard trying to undo the last bolt on a towbar, the vice grip spare pair of hands is a godsend.

on the rare occasion when the gods are happy and the moon is in the right place you may get a bite on a sheared bolt but more often it’ll just make it worse

I have one, had it for years. It is my framing hammer.
I wouldn't like to think I was having to swing it ten hours a day anymore, but I don't let it out of my sight or possession, too many memories. Fed my family for a good few years with that hammer.

I have 3 leather handled eswing claw hammers bought them for 12 quid each .wouldn't use any other make. well balanced and I never miss unlike some other makes

Things I hate - Dremels

Hi, I haven't seen an ironmongers for a while let alone decent tools.

My local - arguably I've never been in, I normally make a pass of machine mart or Engweld, depending how long I want my purchase to survive, on the way home. I hear they've got boxes of odds and ends they've had since they opened.

Also - Dremel style cut off wheels. The number of times I've fitted one, only to smash it to pieces before I've even turned the damn thing on is unbelievable.

Two things in the workshop that I have never been able to use:

Grease guns - these things squirt grease everywhere except down the grease fitting. Always. Without fail.

Impact screwdrivers - the chrome plated things you belt with a fbh. Marked with a cryptic arrow that ensures you have no idea whether the thing is going to loosen the screw or tighten it so hard it will never ever move again. And if you belt it too hard the spring wire circlip flies off and the whole thing falls apart.

I thought the same about the impact drivers and then I realised just push it on a hard surface and you’ll see which way it turns

I just have one leather handled hammer, my Dad's 20 ounce Estwing straight claw model. It holds sentimental value, and I always seem to reach for it when doing fine or finish work.

This thread reminds me of some twist drills I bought, can’t remember the make but they untwisted when used. Made a change from snapping though.

Hi guys fairly new here so don’t know whether it’s been covered before, couldn’t see much but for all you grease gun haters there’s nozzles out there that have a side action lever which will lock the nozzle onto the grease nipple. G coupler is one but not the only example of this once locked on they don’t let go. Downside pricey and can wear through time, also different thread so needs an adapter.

I really can't think of any tool I own I really don't like . . . power washer maybe? However I dress, I always get a wet foot . . .

I don't like using equipment in maintenance rooms when I end up on site somewhere in the world - some of it isn't exactly well maintained.

cheapo picador die cast pulleys now theres even an extra cheap copy called Picardy there even copying the crap and colour them the same as the pucca original tools

I foolishly thought I'd turn one down to make something or other, can't remember what, but under the skin it was just like an ally aero bar!

Is there a special process to produce frothy pot metal?

They've got me out of countless awkward situations, so I rate them as useful tools. I've used them to remove lots and lots of old Philips head screws where a screwdriver can't bite, got sheared bolts out with them and they saved me a lot of time or money once when I used a small pair (with some sandpaper in the jaws for extra grip) to gradually loosen some sliding brake caliper pins that had seized into the body of a brake caliper (one of those where the Haynes manual says "simply slide out the pins" and yet the job takes hours). By gripping them inside the caliper and rotating back and forth by a couple of degrees, the pins gradually came loose and it saved me having to split the caliper body.

I did once make the mistake of buying some cheap Lidl mole grips though. They've been consigned to the drawer where tools go to die.
