Yeah, Moore and wright engineers squares go for peanuts on Ebay, and to be fair, reasonably priced new.
Starett combination squares are not bad.

Just bought myself a brand new M&W combi square on ebay, 90 quid.

There are a couple of moore and wright heads without the rule on ebay at the moment.
With new pins/screws? From what you've Been saying about the cost of there kit.
The screws must be most of the cost.

Is there any real issue with buying a second hand set off the likes of eBay? there seems to be a few go, and seen as a new set is 200 notes easily i just thought it might be worth a pop! and Paul, no worries, you must use a bid snipe or something, i got outbid at the last second! should have used my netbook not my mobile, much quicker!

a lot of this stuff is sold because people get it given and they have no use for it so sell it on ebay or car bootsales i was gonna get a nice set of starret for 30 quid till some prick told the guy how much it was worth he trebled the price so i told him to stuff it as far as he could get it

Another thing Paul, are the newer style with the flat of the protractor off to one side not central like the older style ones any better/worse? tbh im not an engineer, i just like to do as good a job as possible with the stuff i do, so the best tools generally help! Plus id like to do an engineering course at some point, my local college just got a grant to build a new site for engineering courses, and i already have a levels in maths, physics and chemistry so i know the numbers stuff, and have done a NVQ in automotive mechanics so im good with my hands!

Don't think it makes any difference to be honest Dan.

Unless its a tool for a one off job that you won't use again i'm a believer of buying the best you can afford. There is nothing worse, imo, than using rubbish tools.

Agree and if its something you use regularly you only end up ditching the rubbish one and getting the correct one (often in a rush so you carn't shop around)

I bought a nice old style M&W combination set off Ebay a couple of years ago, hardly used and still has that new sharp feeling on all the edges plus the scriber is unused too. The only fault is the tiniest bit of rust pitting on the rule so if you bide your time and keep an eye on the prices you will get a good set eventually.

Its a man's perogotive to buy expensive tools so he needs an expensive toolbox and a workshop for them to go in.

Stanley make a good cast steel 90/45* combi sq. And RDG Tools do box sets of squares. I use these for general setting out, along with a cheapish digi verynear.

also have good quality squares, digi vernier, and mitutoyo for precision work
