You know you've got it bad when you start to duplicate your gear
I'm up to two lathes, two mills, two sandblast cabinets and two parts washers. Oh, and I'm down to two MIGs
Just the two?
I daren't even say how many I've got stashed here.If you have more than one of something, you can make parts for the first one on the second one when it breaks.
I'll be milling out a new leadscrew nut housing for my arno unversal mill on the bridgeport interact cnc in the next week or so, and there were plenty of times I needed a working mill which I used the arno when converting the interact to linuxcnc and modern steppers.
Besides, two parts washers, clean and dirty fluids then, two blasting cabinets both with different media. This all makes sense..
I've only got one lathe at the moment though, although I am fixing one for someone else and its in my workshop (its a melcer me3, rare beast and all aluminium construction, but it has electrical issues), if that counts. I am thinking about a cnc lathe though next when I finish the barn workshop and free some more workshop space up in the main workshop. And I've got a hankering for a die sinker edm too.

I think I could give up the drink easier than the tools..... can't see being dry happening either.

You always have to have at least two of all tools, just in case one breaks and you are momently halted with your projects,

Question ive been asking myself -
I buy tools every month with the wages from my non-engineering job.
I don't know does this mean that I am a willing participant in a consumer society.
I don't buy them for the sake of buying them, or at least that's not the whole reason.
I use them to build stuff, if not immediately then a little down the line, but I do always end up using them.
In a sense tools empower you to build stuff, and building stuff makes me happy.
So I don't yet have a clear answer as to whether I'm just another rabid consumer.

I buy tools so I can repair things myself instead of either paying someone to fix it for me or just having to buy a replacement, usually I save money this way but I honestly don't care that much, because I gain the satisfaction of fixing something rather than just being another consumer in this modern throw away society.
As an example multiple Mig welders make sense as you can have them setup with different wire sizes

I bought my latest tool (a lathe) to make things for my other tools, sad I know but true but now I find I need more tools to enhance its capabilities, also I now need to buy materials to make these tools,when will I learn?After all I didn't need a quick change tool post until I bought the lathe,for gods sake don't tell her indoors.

That's what I tell her as well!! Nobody believes it, just admit it. Free yourself of the burden and your tools if you want me to take that heavy, heavy load from you. Now say after me I BELIEVE, HALLELUJAH!! and sign on this little piece of paper here.

Yeah, I know. All those years and money I wasted on cars, bikes, holidays, houses, drink, hifi and wimmin, I could have had my own lathe museum by now

In my case add in adrenaline too, and i could be retired now playing with tools all day!
