Tooling for milling machine

These came with the milling machine I saved just wondering what cutters I need and is this type of holder a common one basically I'm after any info on them really.

What i think you have there is an Nt40 taper collet chuck, with various sized collets fron 6mm up to 25, also some mt tooling holder in common sizes.

Check whether the chuck has a thread inside it (don't think so, given addjunkie's answer) and then go search ebay for "end mill", threaded or not depending on whether your chuck is threaded.
You need to get diameters that will fit one of your collets, but that shouldn't be a problem, given how many of them you have!

I think it is the clarkson chucks that use the threaded mills. Most collet chucks ive seen just take parallel shanked mills. Id suggest just buying a few of the smaller sizes in hss and having a play. For experimental purposes stick a 10 mill drill in the 10 mill collet, and see if you can drill with it.

I tend to buy long series, cost pennies more and are slightly longer, only a few quid each, dont but the bigger sizes unless you win the lottery, or if you do, hope your sitting down when ordering.


I assume you have a collet chuck set mr skotl. If not id suggest you buy an er 32 set, itll do all youd ever want, or perhaps the next one down. If your machine has an mt taper, you still need to make sure you use a draw bar, noting wirse then soending hours making something for the chuck to drop and wreck it. I have this experience, with a similar machine.

The problem with morse tapers for milling is they aren't really meant for milling, but drilling holes. They do tend to work loose unless you keep the drawbar tight. I bought a chuck and er32 collets off rdg tools. They are the usual chinese made stuff, but i was surprised with the quality, they are good.

That's good Rob got a fair few of them quick release holders and collets, never tried them.

Hate ER take an eternity to change a cutter over and may need thee hands.
R8 or MT3 cutter would be out by time picked up both spanners and cutters don't slip or drop unlike ER from three suppliers one Wabeco.

Yep - got a threaded collet set with the mill - I bought a single 10mm end mill to have a play.
And, yes, I've got a draw bar too

Cheers for the reply's I've got a couple of end mills but some are chipped can you sharpen them some are 2 flute and some are 4 flute

You can sharpen them. If you are just practising/finding your feet don't worry about chips if they still have cutting edges. You're bound to trash a few so why not the chipped ones?
