a mate of mine had his full florist van nicked early one mothers day, they rang asking for a grand to give him the van back, it was empty, still cheaper than an insurance claim,

Had a same thing happen 25 years ago with a Sthil con saw i had go missing...i arranged to meet the caller to hand over the dough, lets just say it did not go well for the "middle" man who through a blood gargled voice told me who had it
was back in my van within another 30 mins but the sting in the tale is he had a load of other gear in his house from other poor victims.Back in the mists I had a neighbour in south Mancs whose main loss was two catalytics while parked on the same spot within a year. It was super easy for them as it was two wheels on a high curb due to the 1.5 car narrow street. He was a shop fitting chippy and regularly left good flip saws and other trinkets in his Sprinter but nobody bothered, just the cat.

Interesting about signwriting. Our insurance was lower because they were signwritten. Something to do with making them less likely to be stolen.
By all accounts it's the same hotel carparks that multiple vans get done on regularly, there's trades that don't use those hotels, sort of blacklisted. You'd think it's bad for hotel business and the hotels would put security on. Equally it'd be an easy nick for the old bill if they waited round for long enough but suspect they don't have the resources to be sat waiting.
It's rife though and nobody other than the trades being robbed even seems that bothered. Some carboots have banned the sale of powertools but it should be a blanket ban for them all.
I think Hilti have some kind of app locking feature for their tools.

It makes sense that signwriting deters theft of the vehicle, unfortunately it also makes the vehicle a magnet for theft from the vehicle

I had a sign written van for about 6 years, it was a regular occurrence to come out in the morning to find it had been broken into, all manor of different ways too!
Luckily I removed any expensive kit every night at the unit, still had some useful, never see again hand made kit in it that went.
For the past 14 years I have not had any sign writing and have been done twice and attempted a few times leaving damage in the process.
Theft of a tradespersons tools is really low! Stealing his lively hood.
You should at least have the right to defend what is rightfully yours!

why should the hotel pay for extra security
why dosnt the company pay for it instead
as goes for tools left in vans at hotels its known of this happening so why dont workers remove all tools into the hotel
main answer they cant be bothered and also they dont get paid for unloading and loading either
tracker tags are getting better and better so are worth considering all depends if you pay for them or not
as goes for theft well it will always be here its with fruit off a neighbours tree but you cant return there cuttings or waste either
as goes for someones garage tools that was an inside job if only there tools got nicked
the desire for better tools will always be there when companys charge a fortune for them yet insurance companys wont replace like for like
no point with blue tooth it will just get hacked or chipping them as the same issue still stands
if it can be done with cars it certainly can be done with tools
theft to eat i dont mind ( shops or companys )
you get no help from the dhss not even a food parcel voucher and your expected to survive with nothing for 6 weeks
food parcel voucher is only for 1 weeks worth of food 1 meal a day that can be soup or even corn flakes

They'll just take the van, the bike shop Transit went and the thief was on CCTV. He just walked up and got into the locked van then drove off and it took less than twenty seconds. It was empty at the time though.

I can’t say to much, however my vans have a lot of physical security matched with advanced electronics.
None of the locks or security is standard.

Happened round here. Additional security, parked under a security light in the drive under the bedroom window . . . bloke went out in the morning to find side peeled open, tools gone. No-one, including, apparently, the dog, heard a thing.
Until people refuse to buy tools from a bloke in the pub, around the corner, from car boots etc, it will keep on.
All the penalities in the world for tool theft won't matter a jot if you don't actually catch them.
