I pass a couple of those places on the way to one of my customers; last autumn the window of one of them was full of fireworks, I presumed machinery sales aren't as reliable as they used to be!

I've debated whether to mention this on here, but what the hell... last weekend one of my drinking mates asked us to take a look in the boot of his car and see if there was anything we wanted before he scrapped it. Mate is a van driver so we weren't expecting a boot full of metrology equipment; some place he'd visited was clearing out old cupboards and a passing gaffer asked him if he had any use for 'this old junk' before it went in the skip.
No, says mate, but I know some guys who might.
So by torchlight we waded through piles (literally) of micrometers, from 1" to 12", depth gauges, vernier calipers, microscope gear... all from Mitutoyo, Moore & Wright, Starrett. There's one Draper mic, it has anvils fitted for measuring external O-ring grooves, piston ring grooves, that kind of thing... but it still zeroed perfectly and looked hardly used.
He was genuinely blown away when we told him to get it all on Ebay, we reckon he could probably fund a weekend away with the wife - he didn't have any idea what any of the kit is.
The irony is that the 1" mics will probably fetch more than the 12" ones; how many people NEED a 12" micrometer?
The even bigger irony is that said passing gaffer probably didn't have a clue what any of the gear is either, let alone how to use any of it...

He didn't have a decent vernier protractor in his collection by any chance ? I don't have much use for one but i always wanted one in the tool chest.

He'd have been happy if we did but to stitch a mate up like that would hardly be fair so we offered to help him ID everything and he can trawl Ebay and see what similar gear sells for, then if he wants to offer it to us to save him the hassle we'll go from there. One of the other guys' dad used to run a tool stall at car booties (you might have come across him yourself) so when the old chap died my mate inherited the tool stock which included a Myford Super 7B and more measuring tools than you can shake a stick at - so he's not short of anything. I have pretty well everything I'll ever need and the other guys just come to us if they need anything!

Possibly; I don't recall seeing one but we didn't open all the boxes. Would a combination gauge do? Mate sent me a text earlier to say he'd photo'd them all but as we didn't get to the pub tonight I haven't seen them - and there's no point in me asking him if he has a combo gauge as I'll get the text equivalent of a blank look
Leave it with me, I'll see what he has... I could ask if he wants me to list it on here for him but he'd have to have some prices in mind which might mean he'd make more on Ebay. I'm not calling you lot tight mind, just careful with your investments

Nah i have a comination set already. I do notice that metrology stuff doesn't go for much on fleabay, i don't think people trust secondhand metrology stuff.
