I ended up having a really good relationship with a couple of screwfix branches, they would match prices on a lot of stuff. Stock wasn't an issue as they were both big braches, also next day used to mean next day and that helped

I was also top spender in one branch and in the top 5 in the other, that helps

Had to have a verbal stand off with some pratt that worked there because he wouldn't do me a refund on some paint.

I wonder why ? At the local car spares two likely lads were asking if they could take an aerosol out to compare colour with the car, when I went out they had nearly sprayed the wing then they took it back in and asked if they could try one a bit darker. I pointed out to Nigel behind the counter what was going off and better to let them just take the lid and he said "Why didn't I think of that?" They went off in a huff when he told them and didn't pay for the one they'd used. It's all mixed on site now so it shouldn't happen any more.

The guy had the computer's weren't working excuse one day, Then pandemic excuse the next. A few other people I know had been to other SF branches & done returns no problem. TS didn't even question me on a return or make it difficult. The bloke was being difficult just for the sake of it

You can’t legislate for to$$ers unfortunately! I wouldn’t say that’s a Screwfix problem, more a person problem

On the subject of TS & Screwfix, guess which numpty ordered something from Screwfix the other week, & tried collecting it from TS? Felt a right numpty. He goes to look for the order, & can't find it. Asks if I have the order number, so shows him it on the phone. Ah, you want to be next door mate, he says.

Over the years I've visited Rufforth Auto Jumble near York. Two stalls in particular sell the highest quality drill bits etc. Each time I've visited I've taken along a wish list of drill sizes in order to build up a good stock. I buy in packs of ten; the smaller sizes like 3mm are cheap even the top brand Dormer; obviously as sizes increase so do prices; I've got plenty of tapping and clearance sizes; I don't bother with tapping size drill charts I just run a drill bit through a nut and if it just touches it's good enough. One outside stall sells a huge range of excellent tooling; all kinds of brand new lathe tooling like chucks; taps & dies etc. at much less cost than buying online. A stall in the middle of the hanger sells Aero Space quality drill bits and all manner of engineers files at very reasonable prices; on other stalls I've bought top quality brands of abrasive paper in 50m rolls the most I've paid is £15 for a roll and I've got plenty of assorted grits; the auto jumble is to me as a candy store is to a child; I always come away with a car load of goodies; I've bought thousands of screws including SS usually in boxes of 200 coming away with a bag full of boxes so now there's a cupboard full of screws of all gauges and lengths. During one visit I bought a scrap Suffolk Colt petrol mower for £20 just on a whim as a restoration project; I did fully restore it and it was this mower which eventually got me onto this forum because it had a leaking petrol tank and I fancied making a new tank from aluminium so ended up with a wonderful Parweld TIG welder then of course needed to learn how to use it; I'm indebted to guys on this forum for leading me by the hand whilst I made all the beginners mistakes but I did successfully make two totally different styles of tank. Having completed the mower restoration the mower was then just an ornament because I had two other petrol mowers so it was sold for £100; not all profit because I bought a number of new bits for it including paint and new Colt decals.

A friend tipped me off about UK Drills where he'd just bought a large selection of drill bits so I did the same; you can't have too many drill bits; I've not used one of these yet already having a good stock of sizes but they are handy to have;

Due to bad weather and Covid I've not attended Rufforth for over a year but I can highly recommend visiting such places if possible; I'm aware of "Normous Newark" but unfortunately it's a bit too far to travel although I do attend Rufforth once a month on the first Saturday of each month; I'll resume my visits to Rufforth once it's safe to do so.

I've been buying tooling for a lifetime and find buying best quality works out cheapest long term; a pack of ten drill bits won't bankrupt anyone so buying a pack at a time soon builds up a good selection. Most of the drill sizes I use are up to 1/2" or around 12mm but the larger sizes tend to be machine drills with Morse taper and these are a lot more expensive.

ruffoth autojumble is nowhere near as good as it was years ago. been going there for the last 30 years and never missed the greedy git owner has killed it off with the price of rent for pitches still go and get the odd bargain but used to spend a fair few hundred quid on a visit last time was just a cup of tea and a 3 quid beefburger a total waste of time
