took time out today

One of those jobs that gets left well by me anyway. took some time today to clean and oil up me lathe ready for the colder weather. i have a problem with it sweating when moving my car in and out with the change of air. It is quite amazing how much water it can produce. Now the lathe is done better get on with the miller.

It's a bit disconcerting when you spray it on first -. it's pink! ! A quick wipe and it becomes normal ''oily'.

ACF50 is a bitch to clean off, GT85 (Halfords) is similar. They do a good job if you don't mind the cleanup after. This is from experience with both on motorcycles. not on lathes

Probably so but it pays to be aware just in case you don't want the hassle when it comes to cleanup time. And don't call me Shirley

I had a similar condensation issue with my lawnmower cutting cylinder grinder until I put a 60 watt tube heater under it.

I thought about a dehumidifier but as i move the cars out most days to work in there its a big air change and it condensates very quickly.

I use a motorbike plastic cover over my lathe, keeps the moisture in the air condensing on the metal.

a 11watt curly wurly bulb in a old fashioned 240v hand lamp body - on 24x7.......then the whole machine covered in a duvet or old blanket's
no rust ever.....
my place is a converted watermill......workshop doors open all day everyday.......
at the mo temperatures range from -3 to 4 at night to +10 to 12 day.......leave the cover of overnight and it's starting to rust in the morning.......
Go-too lathe and milling machine get used sometimes almost every day or not at all.......no special treatment / oiling......except there's more oil in the suds than recomended.......
the special lathe and mill get wiped over with a very wet oily rag after use, it's got 5-40 synthetic Diesel engine oil on/in it, again no rust......
every machine get the same treatment, all got bulbs on 24x7...cost is peanuts considering the effects of rust......
even got a bulb on under the wire feed roll in the MIG....used to throw away the wire roll every spring cos of rusty wire, till I used the bulbs....
also the Indian / Ace 4cylinder engine,(as in the phot, left) is in a wooden packing crate (in an open barn) has bulb in the box as well.....ally and paint is as it was when it went in......
rest my case........

Im using a mix of wd40 and hv46 hydraulic oil at the moment. Quick spray to assist with moisture dispersal then a paint brush with the oil. Clean rag and a wipe if Im going to use the machine. I dont keep my machines covered, they are in a wooden shed, but doors are opened most days.

I've used heated vivarium cable(s) to good effect in the past. Wind it round the machine you want to protect....sorted

ACF50 use it on the XT over winter, just wash off with hot car washy stuff (turtle wax), does a great job of resisting the salt. How it'll do on your lathe I don't know.
