I used to be on quite a few builders/plumbers/electrician groups on Facebook, loads of posts about not telling the Mrs what tools cost, either it's a joke or people really don't get how to run a business?

It is indeed a joke; however, it is of course less-funny when one is required to signpost it as such...

There are two sides to this….

Or does he really think Im stupid enough to believe that only cost 50 quid.

Either can back fire badly.

As for running a business, there are many who still do a carrier back of receipts to an accountant and pay them for data entry, says it all really, though MTD might sort a few of those.

Some people can be good at business, but crap at paperwork. They can process everything perfectly well in their mind, but not on paper, hence the accountant. Different peoples minds work differently.

Yup....I can't be the only one who hides everything that arrives .

The new van was a bit difficult to hide though!...but I did the old "it's for my birthday" trick and seem to have got away with that one.

Over the weekend, whilst sorting through the garage, the wife went through the power tool manuals and I was asked “How many Milwaukee tools do you have as there are a lot of manuals here?” Gulp!

When I was team yellow there was a DeWalt sponsored race car, NASCAR I think

About 20 people sent me pictures of it asking is this your new car?

If there was a plug in 18v tool (pre slide on batteries) I had it....

If your self employed and run your own business then yes, but if your "Employed by a Business" it's much harder, if not impossible to claim back money spent on most tools. And the SWMBO's, sometimes hold the purse string very tight......

After 4 major operations in the last 5 years my wife thinks, I'm trying to escape bit by bit, and keeps asking what things are worth in the garage/workshop, I tell her to speak to my sons they'll advise her......

I think once you get to a certain number of tools, it's more important to spend time/money on tool organization than keep buying more and more. It's much more efficient to be able to go straight to a/the correct tool straight away, rather than ratching through deep drawers/buckets etc.
I do love my tools, but they're a means to an end (and/or capability) not the end in themselves.

I've recently started doing this, and although it feels expensive, it makes working on things (mainly cars), so much quicker and easier, and I find it far less of a chore to put things away at the end instead of leaving them all over the floor because they all just easily go in their allotted places.

My favourite so far has been the ERNST "socket boss" socket trays with rails. I got an ok deal on a multipack of them, I've different colours for metric and imperial, all in my rollercab, but if I need to take them other places the sockets don't fall off. It felt a bit pricey for what they were but they're decent quality and it's made working on things far, far nicer so it was well worth it.

Yes i agree, having all sockets on a proper organizer in a rollcab is far superior to anything else. I just have the cheap organizers with spring clips and rails, but they work just fine for me.

Sadly I haven't touched them in 6 months due to the ai. But if I make a fortune think of all the machines I can get

Spanners are the same sort of thing, I still have one bent to perfect shape to access the starter bolt on a Dodge 50 series with a perkins engine. I never use it now, but keep it as a reminder never to work on a 50 Series again.

I removed the PAS system from a Perkins 4236 dodge 50. Only room to get one hand in there, no way to see anything either. I did the whole job by Braille......
I took the same type engine out of another one and put it in a yank dodge pickup. Loads of room around it in there.....

im lucky in that respect i tell her every penny i have spent cos she knows i go to all the autojumbles and pick stuff up well cheap went on saturday and got nothing ,in the past might have spent 700 or 800 quid the secret is she buys wot i call krap of the internet and stuff for the house and show me and i say hmm verry nice nearly choking

I am truly blessed, my other half earns more than me and will buy me tools, I am her bit of rough!!
Grant you, most of them are normally required to do what ever job she needs doing on her house, but i get to keep the tools.
And the money she spends on Clothes. Shiny rocks etc, i could buy Mafell and still be behind in the spending!!!
And to the original post, no there is no such thing as to many tools, just the workshop is to small
