Too many tools?

I've always tried to have multiples of tools that I use frequently to save hunting around or having to constantly move them.
When I started my Engineering apprenticeship I built a full kit that I kept at work then when I started tinkering with cars I built a second set at home. I've always had another set of slightly different tools for my model making.
I've always kept a decent set of basic hand tools in whatever vehicle I'm driving too. Even when I had company cars I'd have the basics with me - adjustable, pliers, cutters, screwdivers a few spanners, hose clip driver, hammer etc.

I do like tools but I guess that goes for most if us on here

Just don't use your fingers when putting up steel frame buildings! As the young lad, new to the squad did at son in laws place. I took him to hospital…lets just say he can no longer pick his nose properly

Too many tools, yes; many of which I'll probably never use again. Tools from my youth and the different trades I was in as I was finding my way in life.
I've always been a do it myself if I can type of person, and do it right the first time. Learn, and acquire the tools for the job; unless the need would be for an expensive one time use, and I could rent it, such an excavator or bulldozer.

I think once you get to a certain number of tools, it's more important to spend time/money on tool organization than keep buying more and more. It's much more efficient to be able to go straight to a/the correct tool straight away, rather than ratching through deep drawers/buckets etc.
I do love my tools, but they're a means to an end (and/or capability) not the end in themselves.

Thinking of a reorganisation and putting the screwdrivers elsewhere but it also got me thinking, do we all end up with too much of one thing?

Sadly there is. I must 300 various screw drivers alone. I don't think I have bought any since the 80s I just have a habit of acquiring things.
Apart from small tools I have
9 lathes - from a Unimat up to a Holbrook H20
6 milling machines - from a little Proxxon up to an Elliott Sturdimill
3 surface grinder - I did have 4 but actually sold one
A universal cylindrical grinder
5 vertical drills
4 bandsaws from little to huge
A whopping 4 ton engine crane
Mig welder
AC/DC tig welder
Stick welder 375amp
3 plasma cutters
4 compressors
And loads of hand tools, engineering tools and power tools.

So yes I think it is safe to say you CAN have too many tools

That sounds like you have the start of a decent collection!

Never mind hand tools ..... I have one lathe in the garage, six in the workshop and three in my bedroom...... can't get to any of them at the moment
