Right with your help on here and some blasting round on inter web i concluded that making some tongs is quite a viable option. So this evening I fired up the forge made from a truck rim and here's when the problem started. The damn thing is no good for heating long bits of metal. So tommorow the project commences again with the fabrication of a new forge made from a horizontally cut gas bottle.
Yes I know I can cut slots in the wheel but it also doubles up as a perfect BBQ and fire pit so it's now been retired as a forge. Shame really as it worked a treat as a forge if the longest bit of metal was only about 200 mm!

You don't have to heat the whole length of the tongs at once! Most of the work is done at the end!

u can make a good forge with fire bricks out of nightstorage heaters ive just shot 30 away
