Toilet Exhaust Fan

My wife is organising tradesmen to move our downstairs toilet and it won't have a outside wall connecting so running a vent for a extractor to a outside wall is going to be hard. Can you just run a vent into the ceiling/floor space above. There is no shower so it's not for extracting moisture and toilet really only used for number 1s as there are two toilets upstairs with ventilation.

The floor as in below the toilet is a suspended timber floor with a void with a crawl space.

i would sonner vent it down there instead of into the void between ceiling and 1st floor

Why's that? It's a Victorian house so the ceiling/floor space is part of the ventilation of the house design.

Duct it under the floor and vent at low level. Just get a fan that can handle high static pressure drop as Helios ELS or similar. Cheap fan prob won't work as normally axial fan you need a centrif to create sufficient pressure.

That's probably a better solution. We have a cupboard on the other side of one wall, so we may be able to have a vent at low level into the cupboard and then into the floor void in the cupboard and piped to outside. Going through the ceiling space would be a right hassle as the joists are running the wrong direction off one side and the other option is the old original outside granite wall with a extension on the other side.

The only reason I would question venting into a floor void would be if you we to be inadvertently forcing dampness in there which may cause mold despite it being part of an old ventilation system so I personally would not risk making it damp in there.

It'll need building regs approval, so take to whoever deals with those - but as far as I'm aware, a bathroom requires a window or ventilation or both under building regs . . .

I'm not sure they will take a promise to not do no2 in there as holding much, er, water.

Good to know. Also the building inspector at your local council will probably tell you for definate if you email them.

Extraction to the outside is a requirement, duct through the floor void if you can, but otherwise you will have to run on a surface and box
