Todays Mystery object.

Went to the carboot this weekend and bought a box of tools well just for the box as its a nice small Proto one.
In amongst the tat well to be honest it had some great odds and ends they will end up in Winchgirls tool box.
I found this Stanley thing I thought its a Router cutter but its not so any ideas? Its magnetic too?

Just googled the patent No
Never seen one so it can sit on the shelf with my other once in a life time bits rarely used but nice to own.
The interesting thing is the lady I bought the box from sold me a lovely set of USA made Torx drivers, look to be 30 years old but great quality, I wonder if she has a secret stash of American made tools?

Drat. Beat me to it - one of the few times I knew exactly what the mystery object was too.
There are quite a few similar designs out there.

I wonder?
Is it sensitive enough to find broken steel mails in reclaimed wood ? The guys at the Men's Shed regularly kill both planer thicknessers by trying to plane off nails hidden in the wood that has supposedly already been de-nailed & checked .

The idea might be adaptable to using a simple bar magnet in a 3D printed holder with a knife edge at the bottom in a half tube , so it swings as it encounters the magnetic flux interruption .when you gently sweep it over the suspect timber .
I made a simple detector using Dacron thread in a square tube with windows cut in the sides to see any movement of the suspended strong neodymian . that idea may be what I was seeking instead of me going in to electronics & induction loops .

Use a cheap metal detector. That what one bandsaw miller i know does to find embedded nails. He also never mills trees from boundaries because they're likely full of nails and wire.

The day we viewed this property in mid May 2005 there were three oaks on our boundary side over looking several acres of grass land .
The day we moved in 5 June 2005 someone had nailed three strands of barbed wire to them with bent over six inch nails & rather long bent over wood screws , I bolt cropped the wires and eased the nails & screws out .

Looking closely , this hadn't been the first time they'd been used as fence posts by some cheeky BTD.

The trees are now almost 40 yrs old have doubled in girth yet they still bear the initial wirings & fixings in some parts of their bark .

The cheap metal detectors rarely find al panel pins , small nails or sliced off nails made by using a special pallet dismantling band saw blade & machine that often leave a small slug of annular ring nails & a bit of rust behind .
