Pardon our interruption...

After several close shaves with a small axe I made something similar to that using the head of a large axe as the blade. Its a lot safer holding the wood & driving it onto the blade using a big hammer.

I'm left-handed and used to chop kindling as a kid. My Mum stopped me as she was convinced I was going to chop my fingers off (in fact, I never came anywhere near doing so ). Parents, eh?

Anyone ever watched a leftie doing this.....?

Yes, a friend of mine is left handed, and whenever she wields a kitchen knife, it terrifies me. Her cutting veg just looks so clumsy, and yes, she has tried chopping various fingers off.

Got my hand with a chopping axe today.
Cutting sticks for the wood burner.
2 hours in A and E
xray and clean up .

Sorry about that but it at least justifies my mucking about in the workshop making this a week or two ago.

Hatchets don't need to be that sharp for splitting kindling, my carving hatchet is sharp though. I always wear a glove on my left hand to hold the wood I'm cutting.

Hospital was fantastic.
I still think it was overkill.
No doubt the leather glove saved me from a much worse injury .

You hold the wood at the top. Feels wrong, but then if you miss the hand holding has nothing behind it, so just sweeps away in front of the axe. Hold it at the bottom and.....

One of my jobs as a kid was splitting the kindling with a hatchet. Some of the pieces were too wonky to stand up on their own so I'd hold them up, swing the hatchet and let go at the last minute.

Then 6yo sister tried to copy me, but forgot about the last bit. Cue trip to A&E...

Ouch, been there done that didn't half hurt, can feel your pain!
Since I did similar I always use some bits of kindle that I have already cut to hold the bit that I'm splitting, keeps the pinkies on the hand!

I went out with an ex-A&E nurse for several years and my mate's been married to one for decades... unless your spine is in six pieces, both legs in a carrier bag and your heart hanging out on its tendons, don't expect much sympathy from them...
