I have made machine guards for many a global company, under the direction of H&S.

The H&S man at Findus some years ago was proving to the staff that the pinch rollers were accessible through the guards' aperture. Need I say more, ...sleeve of white coat .....up to his armpit....stopping production until freed.

Oh how we laughed.....up our sleeves.

i have heard stories of a h and s advisor complaining that a surface grinder in work.wasnt guarded up. His words were, what if i was to try and brush some dust of the table and didn't realise the wheel was running. Well as it happened he didn't realise the wheel was spinning and ended up with a skin graft

you have my sympathy, you reminded me of the time I was working on a circuit board and hooking my soldering iron on the edge of the bench

I saw it drop off out of the corner of my eye and instinctively grabbed it, four finger tips pressing the hot stick into the palm of my hand, at least it didn't burn the carpet!

Aaarrgh! I did almost exactly that back in about 1983: hooked my iron onto a fireplace lintel then reached for it without looking as I was concentrating on the PCB I was building up. I'd actually brought it back down into my line of sight before the message got through to my brain that three fingers and a thumb were done to a turn. Took bloody weeks to heal.
