Ordering parts for old British bikes can be a tiresome exercise. I ordered an oil pump, '58 on as per the engine number and definitely not the up to '58. However, what I hadn't taken into account was that when old Bert was building them he was using some earlier stuff, meanwhile Joe was in a rush to nip up the shop for his Woodbines so he just grabbed whatever was to hand. Then the supplier went on strike and they couldn't get either so Rod in goods inwards ordered a batch to be made by Messrs Swarf & Co which were a bit like both and used as and when needed between June '58 and August '62 at which point they ran out of stock.

So the answer when asking "Which one do I need?" is always [Puffs on pipes, pauses, peers over glasses] "The other one.".

Change-over years are always problematic. The car world is no different.

Either I'm just unlucky, or every other year was a change over year in the British bike industry.

You've explained Peugeot stock control to at least the 1990's.
It's a random thing which parts were fitted to pugs of that era, especially brake parts.
I have seen 2 different brake back plates fitted to the same car, needing 2 different wheel cylinders.
The only way to get parts is to bring them into the motor factor, compare them to the drawings in the book and make the best guess what the correct ones are.

I have seen 2 different brake back plates fitted to the same car, needing 2 different wheel cylinders.

I've found the same with some Suzuki car parts, the parts diagram shows 4 different brake pad sets for my model/year which is probably why the main dealer always asks for my VIN number when ordering parts.

Our local independent Part Factors sends out all the probable parts to the garages they trust when they are ordering parts for certain car makes.
(Return the ones you don't use and they are Credit Noted back off the account).
Even having the VIN doesn't guarantee the right part, as some of the parts lists are just plain wrong.

But they'll all pass I was on a course where the instructor had to point out which boxes to tick on the exam sheet for a Vietnamese guy as he couldn't read english.

I've been on a lot of Seafish courses for fishermen like that.

We had two nissan navara's at work the same year. I serviced the first one and it needed rear pads and discs so I ordered two sets as the other one was similar mileage. Got the other in the workshop a month or two later and it had drum brakes.

The Rolls Royce B series military engine was a perfect example of a fantastic engine > All bits save for the block & some heads could be split down and remade as a 4 , 6 or straight 8 engine . Government demanded RR split the prize amongst MOD pals & political buddies to get larger numbers cheaper & quicker . So the job went to sub contracts to such as Morris , Ford & Uncle Tom Cobbley and all ........ result a total FUBAR .
