Change-over years are always problematic. The car world is no different.Ordering parts for old British bikes can be a tiresome exercise. I ordered an oil pump, '58 on as per the engine number and definitely not the up to '58. However, what I hadn't taken into account was that when old Bert was building them he was using some earlier stuff, meanwhile Joe was in a rush to nip up the shop for his Woodbines so he just grabbed whatever was to hand. Then the supplier went on strike and they couldn't get either so Rod in goods inwards ordered a batch to be made by Messrs Swarf & Co which were a bit like both and used as and when needed between June '58 and August '62 at which point they ran out of stock.
So the answer when asking "Which one do I need?" is always [Puffs on pipes, pauses, peers over glasses] "The other one.".![]()

I was on a course where the instructor had to point out which boxes to tick on the exam sheet for a Vietnamese guy as he couldn't read english.
