How about just drilling say 3-4 mm then use brass rod as "dowels" and epoxy in, could be very discreet and pretty strong, certainly enough for a sculpture, possibily even the end of the stalk could be filed/forged to be a tight taper fit in a suitable hole again with epoxy or even just a push fit so it could be removed for polishing?

Spring dowels would work well, and wouldn't necessarily need bonding ...that can get a bit messy with gunge oozing out all over nicely polished surfaces.

Why not get a female skeleton about the right size from one of the places which supplies medical students? Then you could put in the kneecaps and hip joints - a surgeon told me it was really like carpentry. You could make a stand for it, if it didn't already have one. Then he could have the old girl in a corner of the room leering at him.

Hitchcock's "Psycho" comes to mind.
