Tipper guard

Installed this today, customer has a rather old and unguarded box tipper, when its elevated its possible to walk straight under the lifting carriage with up to a tonne of meat in the blue dolav,


So I made up a simple cage with some interlocked doors, all stainless of course,
The frames are straight, the camera has distorted the image.

Nice job as usual a suggestion for similar jobs would be to make the 2 big side panels seperate and bolt to uprights, makes transport/erection and any future maintenance/repairs easier.

It all takes apart, the top cross member with the guardmaster switches is bolted in, the side panels are fixed down with through bolts, the guard is actually independent of the tipper other than the 2 sliding fork type support brackets to the uprights, which provide support but allow movement, the the tipper is quite a lively machine with a tonne of product bouncing around in it, the operators shake it on the hydraulics to empty the dolav, and it would soon pull pull the floor fixings out if all one piece, I've thought it through .

Do you do much cleaning up on that sort of stuff. Leave it as mill finish or give it a quick polish?

I reckon polishing and cleaning up a stainless job must account for at least 1/3 of the total work?

Just a quick polish really, I always take the colour out of the welds, a rotary wire brush and a finishing wheel are good enough for this type of stuff, the tubes already dull polished, so a rub over with my favorite weapon here, and a bit of scotchbrite in the corners, You have to give the customer something nice for his money,

Not heard of Flex Power tools before. The Flex Boapipe is a tool I would like. Not at 1100quid though

How do you weld in the mesh Paul?...inside frame,centre frame?,or outside frame?.....and how do you keep it looking tensioned....its very easy to get distortion and buckling in the mesh....might have done that myself

Frames are made to suit the mesh so that there is a full wire all round the edge, its fitted flush with the front face of the box section, you should be able to see it on this picture, to keep it under tension flatten the mesh as mush as possible before you start fitting, these panels were probably the most curved ones I have ever bought, the frame is a couple of mm bigger all round than the mesh,then start at one end and pull it in with clamps and tack as you go, if there any bulges just shrink the wire with a bit of heat using the tig torch, they soon disappear,
